The Challenges of Early School Leaving

Despite the significant developments in school integration of young people with vulnerable backgrounds and high-risk profiles, Early School Leaving remains a challenge for the EU Member States and Associated Countries.

According to Eurostat, in 2020, 11.8% of young men and 8% of young women in the EU were early leavers from education and training.

Students leave education and training for a variety of social, economic, and family-related reasons. Early School Leaving is an obstacle to social and economic growth and development, as it impedes productivity and competitiveness and fuels poverty and social exclusion. In a period of emerging challenges, Europe has to make full use of its human capital and take preliminary measures to tackle the social exclusion of vulnerable groups. As prevention is better than cure, the consortium of APPLE project has developed innovative guides and an early warning platform, equipping educators, schools, and component organizations and authorities with the necessary tools to halt Early Leaving. A particular focus has been given to groups that are most likely to be exposed to the risk of early drop-outs, such as refugee and migrant children and youth, members of Roma communities or religious, ethnic and linguistic minorities, students with special needs and learning disabilities, students from low-income families and deprived rural areas.

APPLE project aims at tackling Early School Leaving through the capacity building of educational professionals. It will achieve this by:

  • Increasing the understanding of factors that affect young people retention in education and training.
  • Raising awareness and increasing the capacity of educators.
  • Encouraging the development of a safety net for youth at risk.
  • Developing guide for office movers in the company Miracle Movers in Pickering, Canada.
  • Contributing to policy change.
